How Far We’ve Come

When I consider my closest friends, most of them have been friends since high school (freshman year, with the exception of Wendy) and I still speak to most of my circle of friends from 6th grade, the first year of middle school. On the one hand, it’s great to know people so well, to still talk to them and to be able to reminisce. On the other hand, it seems like the bonds that held together friendships so many years ago were so much weaker than I now require. It’s difficult not to grow apart when we have all grown into separate people.

It’s not that my friends are bad people or even boring or anything sort of negative trait; we simply don’t have all that much in common and/or I just don’t feel the way about them I used to. Yet it’s so hard to say good bye when friendships seem to be so difficult to make at this point in life. I can count the number of friends I’ve made in the last 2 or 3 years on one hand (Dez and Lars being the foremost). I find myself biting my tongue and holding on to friendships, trying dearly to focus on the good times we do have together (no matter how limited) and memories made, ignoring the elephant in the room. Perhaps it is time to let go and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

Copycat

In true little brother fashion, Goliath takes after his big brother. Phantom has always slept in certain spots, usually right up against the wall. Goliath now does, too. Phantom started sleeping on top of the TV a few weeks ago; now Goliath tries to join.. but usually falls off because Phantom is the small, graceful one and Goliath is just big and awkward. Phantom used to live on top of the fridge a while back, until Goliath took it over. I think it’s cute but I’m pretty sure Lil P isn’t quite so thrilled. He always has to find new spots but sometimes I still find them curled up together and get a picture like this one:

iPlay

I never really consider myself a gamer but.. I do play video and computer games. If you’re interested, he’s the down low.

Maplestory is an adorable, 2D, sidescrolling MMORPG which I’ve played for a few years. I have 7 characters of my own and also tend to 4 on my sister’s account. I prefer playing ranged characters such as pirates or assassins and my two highest characters are a level 51 gunslinger (pirate) and 46 assassin.

Scribblenauts is the most recent addition to my gaming arsenal. The way it’s set up and drawn is deceptively simple; this is one puzzle game which is more difficult than it looks and requires a lot of creativity on my part. I recently wrote about it on Reviews by Cole.

Mario Kart is my long time favourite. I first played it on the Nintendo 64 as we never had an SNES. I loved playing with people who were right next to me and four people really was more fun than two. The racing premise is so basic but adding usable objects and unique tracks makes this game infinitely playable. I currently have the version for Nintendo DS which is just as fun. I love that I can play with others who have a DS; it totally evokes the good ol’ days.

I also play a shit-ton of games on Pogo. Scrabble, Battleship, Monopoly, Lottso Express, Boggle Bash, et cetera. Although, none of those are video games and I’m not entirely sure they’re computer games just because they’re available on the computer

A Day at the Park

I love Halloween. It speaks to the kid in me, I guess and I love the dark overtones. I love doing things and being with people but since there aren’t so many people I know here, I was a little down in the dumps yesterday morning. I had suggested we go to Six Flags which is right in San Antonio because Ryan had been wanting to go since before we moved here. But we were both kind of mopey and it took a while before we decided to go but we went and we did stuff.

We went on a few rides, including one that seemed to break while we were on it, a few that messed with out centers of gravity and even a Scooby Doo ghost blastin’ ride. The lines kind of sucked but I don’t think it was quite as full as I expected it to be.

It also wasn’t quite as festive as I would’ve liked. Places were decorated, there were haunted mansions and tombstones set up and we even caught some zombie dancing in the street (to “Thriller”, of course) but it wasn’t entirely spooky.

There were a handful of visitors who dressed up, mostly the kids and that was cute. There were more Batgirls than I could count and I even saw some Marios and a Luigi.. but I also saw a lot of people whose costumes barely counted as decent to be seen in public which makes me a bit sad. I mean, I’m all for a sexy costume but it can completely be done without looking like a hooker, you know? Especially when I’m looking at young girls and teenagers with their parents and I am flabbergasted that mom and dad thinks that is okay even if it’s a costume. I mean, Halloween doesn’t have to be “Dress Like a Slut day” or, at the very least, save it for when the sun goes down.

Ryan wanted to see more superhero/Batman stuff and I wanted to see more characters (there were none actually wandering the park) but he got a Justice League magnet and won me a stuffed Scooby. We bought an uber soft Scooby pillow, too, and there’s a caramel apple waiting for me today.

It definitely was smaller than I expected and a group would’ve been cool, too. But, overall, we had fun.
