Some have sex because they are in love and want to share that intimacy and closeness with their partner.

One might have sex as a hobby or to cure boredom, to become better in the bedroom. some make sex an active part of relationships to make sure that they are completely compatible with their partners.

Adult film stars have sex on camera for money, the way other actors act.

Prostitutes have sex for money, it is their "career."

Unfortunately, there are those who have sex because someone else is controlling or using them. A few have sex because someone has coerced, guilt tripped, or otherwise verbally/emotionally forced them. When someone physically forces sex, it is considered rape. If, one person changes his or her mind at any time and the other still proceeds with sexual intercourse against his/her will, it is rape.

There are also a multitude of reasons why people abstain from sex.

One might want to remain a virgin until one is married so that one is pure for one's future husband/wife or so that one can learn about sex and sexual activities at the same speed and comfort level as one's spouse.

Some wait until marriage for religious reasons or so that sex will not ruin the relationship.

Some are not waiting for marriage, rather they wait for the right person or time to have sex.

An individual who has been raped, molested or abused might refrain from sexual activities or otherly mentally unstable persons might not have sex. Those with emotional issues such as a negative self image, jealousy or lack of confidence may also choose not to have sex or believe that no one would have sex.

Another reason one may not have sex is if one has has challenging and difficult relationships, possibly because of sex and one decides not to have sex.

Those who are stressed, busy or ill might find that there is simply no room in their lives for sex.

Fear of developing an unhealthy addiction rather than a healthy interest in sex might keep some possibly participants at bay.
