There are many myths about sex, sexuality, masturbation and related topics. While almost all of them have been refuted, there are still people who believe the, sometimes wildly invalid, claims because they were mistaught or simply not taught enough/at all.
The following are common myths which are all false; factual information follows.
- A girl cannot become pregnant the first time she has sex; any time one engages in sexual intercourse without contraceptives (and sometimes with them) pregnancy is a risk.
- Sex is dirty/wrong - only sluts/prostitutes/immoral people have sex; sex is a normal and common activity which has many benefits and people from all walks of life have sex.
- Sex should wait until marriage; unless your religion specifically forbids premarital sex, you should have sex when you feel ready.
- All sex causes STI's/pregnancy; if one takes a few precautions, one can prevent pregnancy and the spread of STI's.
- Sex and love always go hand in hand; while sex can improve and bring intimacy to a relationship, sex can be enjoyed outisde of a relationship as long as both parties are aware of the risks and take precautions.
- Masturbation causes blindness/hairy palms; masturbation is generally healthy and while it can result in exhaustion/soreness, there are usually no significant injuries, if one uses common sense.
- Males think about sex/are more sexual than females; both males and females, especially adolescents are interested in sex and participate/want to participate in sexual activities and intercourse.
- Only males/losers/those who are single masturbate; lots of people masturbate, including females, those in relationships and people of all social classes.
- If a person fantasizes about (or engages in) sexual activity with someone of the same gender, he/she is gay; same-sex fantasies and even experimention are normal for many straight people and do not necessarily indicate homosexuality.
- Pulling out will prevent pregnancy; precum contains semen which can lead to pregnancy and any sperm spilled close to the vagina can possibly lead to pregnancy as well.
- Giving in to sex will make my partner stay or love me more; while sex can improve a healthy relationship it cannot fix an unhealthy one and usually does not lead to (stronger) emotions.
- Only whores/prostitures have STI's; unfortunately, not all people are always smart about their sexual activities and partners and/or not everyone is truthful about their sexual history, which can be dangerous (and also deadly) but also means that almost anyone can contract an STI.
- If a girl (or guy)wears revealing clothing or acts like a flirt/tease, she deserves to be raped; it is never the victim's fault when he/she has been raped, but certain actions can send the wrong message.
- Alcohol/marijuana/[other drug] makes sex better; while some will swear that being under certain influence improves sex, chemicals can impare your ability to make rational/healthy decisions and can make you more vulnerable to rape/molestation.
- A man must have a large penis in order to be good at sex; "It's not how deep you fish, it's how you wiggle your worm." Women like all sizes and shapes of penises.
- A female cannot become pregnant when she has her period; one can beocme pregnant at almost anytime after puberty and before menopause.
- A female without a hymen is not a virgin; the hymen can break from many physical activities and sometimes does not even exist to begin with!
- There is some sort of text or exam that can tell if a female is a virgin; there is no way to tell if a female is a virgin short of having sex with her or seeing her pregnant tummy. ;)
- STI's are only contracted through vaginal sex;STI's can be transferred during anal and oral sex as well as skin contact and other bodily fluids.
- When a girl loses her virginity, she will bleed; not all females bleed when they lose their virginity because the hymen may already have been broken or may not have existed at all.
- A male is a bad lover if his partner does not orgasm from vaginal intercourse; most women do not orgasm from intercourse alone and need clitoral stimulation as well.
- Everyone is doing it. Click here for some statistic which prove this wrong.
- Using two condoms is better than one; contrary to popular cliche, two condoms will create more friction, thus making the condom(s) easier to tear or break.
- If a guy has "blue balls," a female should give in to sex; both males and females can experience some discomfort if aroused and it might be most pleasurable to experience orgasm with a partner, but pelvic congestion can be dealt with either with masturbation or time.
And the most common and most fraudulent myth about sex:
Safe sex There is no such thing as safe sex. There is only safer sex - sex during which contraception is used, both a barrier and a hormonal method, to prevent STD's and pregnancy.
