I was reading an article on TechDirt about how social networking sites (such as Myspace and Facebook) are no longer the hot spot they once were and have failed to live up to expectations especially when it comes to ad revenues. The great William Gates himself has pulled out of Facebook after making an investment of grand proportions ($240 million) a few months ago.

That's all fine and dandy. The rest of the world is finally catching up with the realization I made years ago that social networking sites don't actually provide anything for a person to do and, after catching up with ye olde friends, the novelty soon wears off (unless you're like myself and love Facebook's applications - which is a mini-controversy of itself).

An interest comment was made and I'd like to add some thoughts to it.

People may get tired of social networking sites, but no one is going back to static webpages. The point isn't about which is the social network du jour, it's the ability to offer users a way to personalize websites and modularize them to their needs, as well as making inter-saite communication with not just friends, but people with similar tastes and interests.

I've been a supporter of personal sites since Web1.0,except no one called it that, then; it was just the Internet.
