Games
Online games are a popular use of the internet and there is as wide a variety of games available online as there is people searching for them. Searching for the right game for you may not be an easy task. There are many to choose from. There are browser based games and application games. Also some games are free while others are not and prices and services can also vary. There are game sites which host numerous games while other websites are home to only one. There are games which originated on the computer and games which have been converted to the technological era. There are also versions of classic video game console games as well.
One can play a multitude of browser-based (flash/shockwave) games on websites like Yahoo! or MSN. These games are not saved to one’s computer and can only be played when the webpage on which they reside is accessed via browser. Those sites, and sites similar to them, tend to be simpler, non-character-based games. MSN games are also accessible via MSN Messenger where one can play with someone from one’s buddy list. Similarly, other IM services include games.
Some browser-based games appear and work more like console video games or games which you download to your computer. An example of this is Runescape. Additionally, there are popular browser based “games” which work by you luring “victims” in with a link where they are transformed into a monster of some sort, such as a vampire in the game Ravenblack. Although not entirely a game, Gaia Online is considered a social gaming community which includes many gaming aspects and flash games within the site.
One of the popular genres of browser-based games are virtual pet games where you create and take care of pets of either invented or real species. The most popular of these is Neopets. Neopets also includes many flash games on its website. Other popular virtual pet sites include GoPets, PowerPets and Webkinz.
One can also find popular pen and paper games which have been converted to play via browser including games such as crossword puzzles and Sudoku: Thinks Crossword, Web Sudoku.
One can also download games from the internet. Generally, game applications which one downloads tend to be more complex – though not always – and there’s a larger selection. Sites like Yahoo! and MSN games tend to have a limited number of games available for download, some which are not free.
Many larger, more popular games are available online via their websites, some for a price. Some games have a one-time purchase fee while others have a subscription fee (usually monthly) and some have both. Many games which are available for video game consoles are also available on the PC (personal computer) but the opposite is not true.
